Dreams to me are one of the most intriguing phenomenon. Dreams can diffuse the pressure in a stressed person, provide creative solutions to a problem solving mind, help complete stories and eulogies and also can come true while proving to be nightmares. Yes, all of these have happened to me and I cherish the imaginative randomness they bring to my thinking. And yet I sometimes wish I could dream about something specific, atleast through a defined context – even though the dream itself will be abstract.
I feel dreams have much similarity to the ionization of atoms where the electrons jump at a certain threshold. If neurons are considered to be small stores of memory, then a relationship function between our current experiences, emotions, past learnings : R(current interaction experience& emotion, past learnings) will be the frequency with which these neurons vibrate. However, while sleeping only some of these neurons resonate at this frequency – thereby crossing the threshold to dream zone. The dream is a resultant of inter mingling of these resonating vectors. The point is, if we can figure out the correct resonating frequency of typical neurons (although figuring out the R function itself is difficult, artificially tapping the resonating frequency would be much easier), we could probably control the context of the dream to a much larger degree and hence produce still abstract dreams but with desirable underlying context. Considering a simplistic example, resonating the neurons in the creative part of the brain may result in less haphazard and more creative dreams.
Yes, this theory came about in a dream tonight. As humans tackle modern problems, the expertise becomes more specialized – research and efforts get fragmented, but who is looking at the big picture? We are fighting cancer and aids separately, but instead of attacking them one at a time, who is looking at how to fortify the human immune system so none of these ailments stand a chance? Dreams, I believe, contain an untapped potential of abstract ideas waiting to be discovered- and can provide the overall picture which we may be missing.
PS: Dont try this at home, resonating neurons and controlling the dreams’ context may be too much to handle for a human brain.
